Guided Walks 2012

Saturday 14 April – Lindley Wood Reservoir & Farnley
Meet at 8.00 am. Finish around noon.
We meet at Lindley Wood Reservoir where the B6451 crosses over the dam wall. It is the road from Otley to Pateley Bridge.
The walk takes us along the length of the reservoir and follows the River Washburn to the village of Farnley. A different route brings us back to the reservoir.
The path in places can be muddy after rain so consider wellies if appropriate.
There should be plenty of migrants to look out for as well as beautiful countryside.

Saturday 5 May – Heber’s Ghyll Wood & the edges of Ilkley Moor
Meet at 8.00 am. Finish around noon.
Go down The Grove, in Ilkley, with Betty’s on the right and turn left into Grove Road. Continue for some time until you come to Heber’s Ghyll Drive on the left. Turn into it travelling uphill until the wood is on the left and park here.
With luck Wood Warbler may be singing along with other migrants. The diverse habitat on the edge of Ilkley Moor should produce a variety of species.
There is some uphill walking at a gentle pace and good views enjoyed of the Wharfedale Valley.

Ring Shaun directly for details on 01274 770960.
Tarifa Trip 2011
The BOG Members' Trip to Tarifa, Spain took place between 10th and 17th September. We were very capably lead by Paul Willoughby of Bird Holidays. The Group spent three days around the marshes of the Guadalquivir before moving south to Tarifa where the major migration of raptors was underway. Here we were treated to one of the great ornithological experiences, as very large numbers of Honey Buzzard, Booted Eagles, Short-toed Eagles, Black Storks, White Storks, Griffon and Egyptian Vultures gathered to make their way across the Straits of Gibraltar. Other birds seen during our excursions included fantastic views of Red-necked Nightjar, Marbled Duck, White-headed Duck, Marsh Sandpiper, Black-shoulded Kite and a rarity in the form of a Royal Tern which was on the beach amongst the wind surfers at Tarifa. A boat trip out into the Straits yielded superb views of Pilot Whales, Storm Petrel and the Skopoli's Shearwater. This was a wonderful trip, and thanks once more to Paul Willoughby for making it such an enjoyable occasion.
