2007 |
| Throughout
February and March at least three Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers have
been seen in Shipley Glen. The birds have either been in the area
behind the Old Glen House or in the Horse Chestnut trees
along the Higher Coach Road. (see map below). LSW were also seen
in Bull Copy Woods along the River Aire at Hirst Wood. On the 8th
April a pair were very active by the Old Glen House. |
2006 |
| A
pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers were seen at the two marked spots
in the Baildon area of Shipley Glen. |
They
were seen on March 18th and 19th, 2006. A male bird was also seen
on 26th March. The pair were again seen on 29th March. |
| The
male was first sighted in the Horse Chestnut on the left of the
drive just past the first 2 (or 3 ?) dead trees. As we were watching,
the female came virtually over my shoulder from the right, landed
in a tree to my right which then prompted the male to come over
- he started to display and really gave it some hammer !!! We got
superb views on and off for the next couple of hours- they would
fly off and then re-appear - the male by itself on the last sighting.

The
pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers were again seen today (29th) on
the Higher Coach Road, Baildon. The female flew into a horse chestnut,
stayed at the
top of the tree for a few seconds and then flew off
across the field into trees on the Gilstead side of
the Glen. The male was afew trees further down the
driveway. He was calling from the top most branches
as he inspected the outer parts. It was the
call that attracted me, for it was much louder than I
would have expected, more of a subdued GSW. I watched him for a couple
of minutes and then he flew to
another tree across the drive and commenced 'drumming'
on what appeared to be a well worn patch. Again this
noise was much louder than I would have expected. He
then flew off back in the direction from which he had
come. (PK) |
