GREEN WOODPECKER Picus viridis
Fairly common resident breeder.

Found throughout the area but most often located by the call during Spring, with April being the prime month. There were far too many sites to enumerate but frequent records came from Timble Ings, Lindley Wood and Beaverdyke Reservoirs and the Barden/Bolton Abbey area. Birds were also seen at Paul Clough and Kex Gill Quarry where juvenile birds seem to consistently turn up from September onwards.

The only breeding records came from Denton Hall Woods and St Ives.

GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER Dendrocopus major
Common resident breeder.

The Great Spotted Woodpecker is the commonest and most easily seen woodpecker in the recording area, with birds being encountered at many sites at all times of the year. Breeding was confirmed at Beecroft Moor plantation, Esholt, Menston, Nell Bank and Middleton Woods.

LESSER-SPOTTED WOODPECKER Dendrocopus minor
Uncommon resident breeder.

A typical year with birds noted at nine different locations. These comprised of birds at St Ives and Shibden Park (January); Esholt (March); Park plantation, Swinsty and Sandwith Moor (April); Strid Woods (May); Denton Hall and Nell Bank (June) with finally Farnley (November). The Sandwith Moor record relates to a pair but all other records are of singles.
