RED GROUSE Lagopus lagopus scoticus
Resident breeder.
A common species on all our keepered heather moorlands and recorded in small numbers every month.

RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE Alectoris rufa
Resident, possibly all from introduced stocks.
The status of the red-legged partridge is affected by release programmes active in certain areas. Stocks appear to remain healthy at these release sites, and whilst the programmes continues, it is difficult to establish any meaningful status for the species.

GREY PARTRIDGE Perdix perdix
Resident breeder.
This species was recorded at many sites throughout the area. It was particularly pleasing to report double figure counts at four sites of which Sandwith Moor produced the highest total of 20 birds in December. Doe Park, Denholme Clough and Otley Gravel Pits all held up to 16 birds with the latter site also having confirmed breeding.

COMMON PHEASANT Phasianus colchicus
Resident breeder.
A widespread bird and often seen in large numbers where birds have been released for shooting. Inspires little interest for most birdwatchers.
