RED GROUSE Lagopus lagopus scoticus
Resident breeder.

A common species on all our keepered heather moorlands, and recorded in small numbers every month.

RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE Alectoris rufa
Resident, possibly all from introduced stocks.

Stocks appear to remain healthy at all the usual release sites, and whilst the release programmes continue, it is difficult to establish any meaningful status of the species.

GREY PARTRIDGE Perdix perdix
Resident breeder.

Otley Wetland hosted birds all year round, with up to 15 present in December. Breeding occurred here with seven young noted. Young were also reported from Sconce Lane near Baildon, whilst nearby Glovershaw shared with Thornton Moor Reservoir the year’s largest congregation of 25 birds. Up to 15 at Hag Farm, Burley-in-Wharfedale, was the only other double-figure count. Elsewhere, records of single figures came from Burley, Farnley Moor, Sandwith Moor, Denholme Clough, Soil Hill, Warley Common, and Luddenden Dean.

COMMON PHEASANT Phasianus colchicus
Resident breeder.

A widespread bird and often seen in large numbers where birds have been released for shooting. Inspires little interest for most birdwatchers.
