A Nightjar ringed by members of the Bradford Ornithological Group, 2006 photos : Sean Gray and Andy Jowett
Rare summer visitor.
2003

Birds returned to last years breeding site on the 28th May (G+L Pettit et al) and by early June at least two males and a female were present. Subsequently, a nest was found and the two young were ringed before successfully fledging (PR). A second brood was attempted but the single egg was predated.

Sound recordings showed that the breeding male from 2002 did return this year but did not form part of the successful breeding pair this year.

2004

A pair had returned to the previous years’ site by 27th May. The first nesting attempt failed around the predicted hatching date but the second brood was reared successfully, and the two chicks were ringed (G&LP, PR et al).

At another recently created area of suitable habitat, two birds were reported during June and July (per AJ).

2005

A pair returned to the previous years’ nesting area, where a bird was first seen on 24th May. A nest was found and young were hatched, but they were quickly predated, and it is thought unlikely that a further attempt was made (AJ, PRo).
