The Reservoir Reserve is one of the key watch sites in our area. Access is limited to B.O.G. members only and keys are available to all members. There is a hide, a small car park and a log book is maintained on the site.

January 2004 1600 Common Gulls at roost
2nd January 2004 Five Shelduck
27th January 2004 Single Mediterranean Gull
27th January 2004 1600 Black-headed Gulls at roost
21st March 2004 19 Herring Gulls
23rd March 2004 Green Sandpiper
27th March 2004 Six Dunlin
27th March 2004 15 Whooper Swans for their second day, and this location had flocks of 42 and 40 on the 28th.

28th March 2004 Three Shelduck flew over
20th March to 28th April 2004 a total of about 760 Lesser Black-backed Gulls passed in this period, with a peak of 145 on 28th March. Probably in excess of 3000 birds were seen there in all, with daily maxima of 121 in May, 274 in June, 343 in July, and 364 in August.
April 2004 Over 3400 Meadow Pipits were seen. Counts of 1170 on 11th and 950 the following day were particularly notable.

21st April 2004 Whimbrel flew over Reserve. There was another on 2nd May.
26th April 2004 Greenshank
April and May 2004 Spring migration produced a party of ten Wheatears.
April and May 2004 Spring migration produced Little Ringed Plover.
May 2004. Up to three Dunlin were seen displaying The Reerve still held three at the height of summer on 20th June.
May 2004 Single Ringed Plover were seen here until 29th May, and five flew through on 3rd and 16th May.
30th May 2004 Red-backed Shrike. A singing adult male was located in the plantation. This constitutes only the third Group record.
11th June 2004 Little Ringed Plover on passage
Mid-June 2004 Post-breeding flocks of Lapwing were visiting the reserve.
June 2004 1700 Starling. About 300 Starlings were seen in spring, and about 5400 in autumn, with movements of 1000 on 7th November, and 1370 a week later being particularly notable.
20th June 2004 There were considerable movements of Swifts in June and July, the most spectacular of which was of some 2200 birds prior to and following a storm on 20th June. During this period, about 3600 birds were seen in total..
July 2004 50 Linnets during the month.
10th to 16th July 2004 Rose-ringed Parakeet
10th July A single Ringed Plover. Two adults were present on 31st July, possibly lingered until 9th August, and were joined by a juvenile on 4th August. A further five passed through during a migration watch on 31st July, and the final sighting was a pair heading north- west on 8th October.
11th July 2004 Male Common Scoter
18th July 2004 The earliest returning migrant Dunlin was one seen flying north over the Reserve on , the first of several autumn sightings here.. The month’s maximum of six was seen on 27th July, and others were observed until early August. After a gap of some weeks, two were noted on 24th September, and numbers built up again during October and November, with a peak count of 15 on 7th October, and the year’s final record, two birds, on 21st November.
Summer 2004 Golden Plover probably bred on the moors around the Reserve.


 

 

 

18th July 2004 Three Common Tern
24th July 2004 Single Whimbrels were seen heading west the following day and another went by on the 29th.
25th July Three Shelduck passed by
29th July to 9th August. A lone adult Yellow-legged Gull was found on the 29th, and two the following day. These birds were joined by two first-winters on the 31st, and a single adult was then noted for the first nine days in August
July to mid-September 2004, 2060 Barn Swallows passed through . Three-figure totals were noted on seven dates, with three days producing between 300 and 400 birds.
Summer 2004 25 Grey Partridge reported
3rd August A party of 26 Whimbrel was seen bathing, as the mist cleared
4th August 2004 A Turtle Dove was discovered drinking from a pool on the track by the Reserve
5th August Two Wigeon
7th August 2004 12 Herring Gulls
8th August 2004 Green Sandpiper with another the following day.
8th August 2004 Ruddy Turnstone
10th August 2004 Spotted Redshank flew over
10th August 2004 The year’s highest flock of seven Greenshank was present here, and another two passed through west.
22nd August 2004 Pied Flycatcher on passage.
August 2004 A party of 18 Wheatear passed through.
18th September 2004 10 Sand Martin
19th September 2004 2550 Meadow Pipits passed through. Out of a total number of 7700 birds seen during August and September, day totals were never less than 100, with between 400 and 1000 on five dates.
22nd September 2004 Two Yellow Wagtails on passage
27th September 2004 Up to three Whinchats
30th September 2004 the maximum count was 25 Goldcrests, during a period when 85 birds were seen in all.
1st October 2004 Brambling (the first autumn recording).
1st October 2004 Snow Bunting
1st October 2004 Lesser Redpoll with 83 birds seen in all, including 31 on 1st October, and 39 six days later.
October 2004 Over 800 Meadow Pipits were seen moving south. Throughout the next few days, numbers were close to 1000, with waves of the birds, flying low and skimming the roof-tops.
October 2004 About 200 Greenfinch seen in three days

October 2004 At least 25 Blackbirds
October 2004 A total of 320 Goldfinch to the end of October, with a maximum daily tally of 41 birds
October 2004 A total of only 81 Siskin seen
October 2004 An apparent influx occurred of Jackdaw in early October, when over 200 birds were seen in a three day period.

1st October 2004 Aggregations of 49, 50 and 88 Mistle Thrush passed on the first three days.
3rd October 2004 Four Tree Pipits on migration
8th October 2004 Over 2100 Redwing were counted flying high towards the north-west. Birds continued to pour in over the following two days, with counts of 3500 and 1950 at this site. By the month’s end, the daily maximum was 690.

Autumn 2004 Over 170 Pied wagtails were seen, with a daily maximum of 40 birds.
